•Liam Mellows GAA Club, which celebrated its 75th birthday last year, is to launch the next phase of its development at the club grounds at Ballyloughane, Renmore. After securing planning permission last year, the club is now beginning development of a 4.5 acre portion of land, adjacent to the existing pitch at Ballyloughane, to provide an additional playing field. As part of this development, Liam Mellows GAA Club will be constructing a shoreline walkway for public use across the club's facilities. On Sunday (January 25) the club will host an official ceremony at 12 noon to mark the turning of the soil, to be conducted by Seán Duggan, former Galway hurling legend and a long standing member of Liam Mellows. Remembering the Connaught Rangers

For those interested in the history of the Connaught Rangers a walking tour of Galway city to seek out memorials and artefacts related to the once great regiment is planned by the Connaught Rangers Association. Galway City has many great memorials related to the once great regiment including the memorial window in Galway Cathedral, and the cannons at City Hall which have been in the city since 1857 to commemorate the involvement of the regiment in the Crimea War.The tour will start in Renmore and then move towards City Hall, Saint Nicholas Collegiate Church, and finish in Galway Cathedral.

In the 1970s Renmore was a fast growing suburb with many young families moving in. There were very few facilities in the area at the time. The school assembly hall was the only social centre and it was there, in the tiny kitchen, that Sean O’Malley suggested to his team mates in the local badminton club they might consider having a parish pantomime. They agreed. A group was formed and they drew up a mission statement — “To foster, encourage and assist theatrical, cultural, and artistic activities in the Renmore community, but also throughout Galway and its environs, and in so doing, to assist whatever charitable causes are deemed appropriate by the committee.”

•St Paul’s Oughterard face Kiltimagh next Sunday in Ballinrobe at 1.30pm in the Connacht senior B final. The game is followed by the A final between the all-Mayo combination of St Geralds v St Colmans at 3pm. There will be extra time in both games if required.
